Replacing wheel bearings or brake rotors is not such an easy job on may 1980s - early 2000s Mitsubishi vehicles. Their captive design requires the use of this special socket to remove the axle lock nut as well as to preload it with the proper amount of torque during reassembly.
Sure, Mitsubishi owners have been modifying other vehicle's axle nut sockets to get the job done for years but those don't have pins that are the exact size needed so engagement is very poor. Many a busted knuckle has resulted from a modified socket slipping out when trying to apply over 100 ft lbs as required during the preload stage.
Long since discontinued by Mitsubishi and tool companies worldwide, we've brought our own OEM-quality version to market so no need to keep hunting on eBay or Yahoo Auctions Japan. While the price is still much more than we wish a single socket would cost (even for this 3 pound beast), we've managed to get the price down over 30% compared to what these rare tools typically sold for online from overseas.
