If your 4x4 lever/shifter is sloppy (has a lot of side to side movement) or you're having trouble shifting between 4x4 modes - then the original ball inside your transfer case lever has probably disintegrated and needs to be replaced. This problem is most common on Gen 2.5 Monteros (1998-2000).
This part is located at the base of the 4x4 lever where it meets the transfer case and can be accessed from the inside of the vehicle by removing the center console trim and transfer case lever.
