The 2003-2006 Montero is equipped with an electronic stability control system known as M-ASTC. This system includes: Active Traction Control (ATC), Active Stability/Skid Control (ASC), and Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS).
While most people understand what anti-lock brakes are, ATC and ASC are often confused. So what's the difference?
ATC: Primarily focuses on Wheel slip under acceleration, and is designed to help traction off-road.
ASC: Primarily focuses on Skidding, oversteer/understeer in corners, and is designed to aide in emergency maneuvers on road.
Both systems can apply brakes automatically to individual wheels and can reduce engine power/throttle input.
So while each system has a different intention, off-road, they can both function similarly - leading to the confusion.
There is no built-in way to disable Active Traction Control. The switch located in front of the automatic transmission shifter can be used to disable ASC, but it does not turn off ATC. Additionally, when the vehicle is put into 4LLC, ASC is automatically disabled and ATC remains on. Even if you pull the fuse in the engine bay, it will not disable the system completely. Up until now, the easiest way to disable ATC was to disconnect a wheel speed sensor but that meant having to get out of the vehicle, get behind a fender liner, unplug the harness, have something to cover the open wire harness ends so as not to get dirt/water into it them when off-roading, and then having to do everything in reverse when finished. Now, with this plug and play unit, you will have a factory-looking switch in the cabin to disable all electronic stability systems at the touch of a button.
Why would you want to disable ATC? Even though ATC is designed to help traction offroad and is an incredible system at doing so most of the time, there are certain situations where it can become a hinderance: in very soft and deep terrain, such as fine sand and deep snow. When offroading in these conditions, wheel speed can be your friend. You often have to give the vehicle lots of throttle, sometimes steering the front wheels back and forth to keep them spinning fast and out of ruts, and from digging down into the soft terrain where they would lose momentum and get stuck. So the last thing you want is for an electronic system to kick in and kill your throttle or apply brakes.
Why ABS? It's true, ABS is a useful feature and we'd rather keep it active but unfortunately, because of the way this kill switch ties into a wheel speed sensor, ABS is just a casualty and gets disabled as well.
100% Plug & Play, no cutting or splicing of wires.
When the included cabin switch is pushed, all M-ASTC Systems are disabled and 3 warning lights will illuminate on the instrument cluster: ANTI LOCK, M-ASTC Symbol, and ASC OFF Symbol.
To turn the M-ASTC system back on: Push the cabin switch again, turn off the vehicle, and then restart the vehicle. For confirmation, all warning lights will now be off on the instrument cluster.
